Announcements:
Fund Established for Graduate Chamber Ensembles at UConn
With the assistance of Professor Irma Vallecillo and support of Dr. Catherine Jarjisian, The Paul C. Richards and Gladys Richards Charitable Foundation Chamber Music Program Fund and Pre-Professional Chamber Music Ensemble Mentoring Program was established to fund pre-formed, graduate chamber ensembles to serve as in-residence ensembles at the University of Connecticut, pursuing a Performer’s Certificate in Chamber Music performance.
As imagined by Dr. Louis Hanzlik, the program’s curriculum coordinator, the Richards Pre-Professional Chamber Music Ensemble Mentoring Program provides intensive training and guided mentoring for talented, pre-formed chamber ensembles pursuing a career in chamber music performance and teaching. With the development of Artistry and Artist-Citizenry at its core, this program will assist student ensembles with the promotional activities, teaching, and outreach experiences necessary for a successful career in chamber music and 21st century artistry. Participating ensembles will benefit from:
• One-year Performer’s Certificate residency program with full tuition scholarship
• Weekly instruction from University of Connecticut artist-faculty
• Daily ensemble rehearsals
• Master classes by guest artists
• Outreach performances through the University of Connecticut
• Recitals on campus
• Teaching Internship experience through the University of Connecticut Department of Music and E.O. Smith High School
This year’s Richards resident ensemble is the Nautilus Brass Quintet (Boston, MA)
About this year’s Richard’s student artists, one of New England's most ambitious musical ensembles, the Nautilus Brass Quintet is quickly carving out a name for itself in the world of brass chamber music. With equal dedication to performance excellence and educational significance, the members of Nautilus Brass are fully invested in breaking down the stereotype of the brass quintet as a bombastic tangent to artistic chamber music. Recent successes include being finalists in the 2010 Koetsier Competition and 2011 J. C. Arriaga Competition, as well as semi-finalists in the 2011 Plowman Competition, one of only two brass quintets to advance from the tape to the live round. Nautilus Brass Quintet received first prize at the 2011 UConn Brass Festival Ensemble Competition.
2011 found the quintet moving from its home base in Boston, MA to Storrs, CT to attend the University of Connecticut through the Richards Pre-Professional Chamber Music Ensemble Mentoring Program. This year-long program has allowed the quintet to continue its mission of chamber music education through partnerships with E. O. Smith High School (Storrs, CT), the Fischer Music School (Centerbrook, CT), and the Windham, CT school district, through a generous grant from the Ossen Fund for the Arts. Nautilus has also happily participated in benefit concerts on behalf of the Rectory School (Pomfret, CT) and the Norwich Public Schools Education Foundation. NBQ is the chamber ensemble-in-residence at San Jose State University's annual summer music program for young musicians, Summer in the City.
