A Typical Audition Day
8:30 – 9:00 a.m. - Arrival and registration at von der Mehden lobby. Information packets distributed
9:00 a.m. - Welcome assembly in von der Mehden.
9:30 a.m. - Students begin auditions or tests. (Individual schedules included in packets.)
1a) The Aural Preparedness test assesses aural comprehension and memory (register, rhythm, pitch patterns, notation reading). Students listen to short musical excerpts and respond to questions about pitch and rhythm on an answer sheet containing multiple-choice, pattern-completion, and dictation items (30 minutes).
1b) The Fundamentals test assesses notation of key signatures, scales, rhythm and meter, intervals, and triads (15 minutes).
2) The Sight Singing test assesses ability to sing in tune and to match pitch and rhythmic patterns. It is administered individually by a faculty member or graduate-student auditor (5 minutes). Students self-schedule this test before or after their audition and before 11:30.
9:30 a.m. - Parents stay in von der Mehden for more questions and answers and a tour of the facilities. They may re-connect with their auditioning student after the audition outside the Dramatic Arts/Music Library. UConn student guides are available throughout the day.
