Baritone Gary Durham is an accomplished recitalist, oratorio soloist and opera performer. Originally from Delaware, he performs regularly throughout the New England and Mid-Atlantic regions. His name has appeared on the rosters of Boston Lyric Opera, Opera Boston, Opera Providence, the Handel and Haydn Society, and the Boston Secession. Durham has a particular interest in contemporary music. He has performed in Consent to Gravity, a musical and choreographic interpretation of the 'scores' of artist Frederick Sommer at the Pace/MacGill Gallery in New York City, the Providence Performing Arts Center, and the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. In 2005, he premiered and recorded excerpts from the opera Frank Lloyd Wright, by American composer John Wallace. Other memorable operatic roles include Peter in Hansel and Gretel, Dmitri Petrovsky in The Music Shop, Count Robinson in Il Matrimonio Segreto, and Bunthorne in Gilbert and Sullivan's Patience. Recent oratorio engagements have included the baritone soloist in Bach's Magnificat and Cantata 21, Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass, Liszt's Via Crucis and excerpts from Orff's Carmina Burana (Ozawa Hall). He is on the voice faculty of Emerson College, teaches the undergraduate opera performance class at Boston University and for the past nine summers has been an instructor of voice, opera and lyric diction at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. Durham holds a bachelor of music degree in voice performance from the University of Delaware and a master of music degree in voice performance from Boston University. Summer programs/workshops have included the Baroque Performance Institute at Oberlin College and the Summer Opera Workshop at New England Conservatory.
