Music EducationGraduate ProgramThe Music Education program is in a period of transition from the auspices of the School of Fine Arts to the Neag School of Education. In order to facilitate this transition, the Department of Music will not be accepting any applications for admission to the master's or doctoral degree programs in Music Education for academic year 2008–09. The University of Connecticut offers a respected graduate program leading to a Master of Music in Music Education degree. The music education department at the University of Connecticut offers practicing teachers opportunities to develop greater understanding of teaching and learning processes and to gain new perspectives on music and education in contemporary society. The program includes courses on pedagogy and curriculum, as well as current topics and innovations in the field of music education. Academic and performance-related studies also are included. The graduate program in music education is open to certified music teachers. Two-Year Master's Degree ProgramThe two-year program is beneficial for career advancement in the teaching profession and serves as preparation for doctoral study in music education. Courses are offered during the day at the Music Building on the Storrs campus. Students benefit from full-time study and the opportunity to interact closely with the music education faculty in a variety of projects and programs. Students also can participate in ensembles and continue private lessons. Graduate Assistantships are available. Admission ProceduresApplicants must have a current teaching certificate and a bachelor's degree in music, preferably in music education. Teaching experience is preferred.
Graduate School applications are available at http://www.grad.uconn.edu/applications.html Letters of reference should be current and from people who are well aware of your teaching and music skills. The 20-30 minute videotape of candidate's recent teaching should demonstrate personal musicianship. The tape should feature a rehearsal or class, not a performance. Videotapes should be sent to the coordinator of music education. Music Theory Examination can be taken at your convenience at the Music and Dramatic Arts Library. Please check www.lib.uconn.edu/online/research/speclib/music/ for library hours and plan approximately 3 hours for the test. Up to six credits of graduate work taken at the University of Connecticut may later be applied if a student is accepted into the Master of Music Education degree program. Please note: UConn does not offer a master's degree in music education with certification. Graduate AssistantshipsThe application deadline for those applying for graduate assistantships is April 1st. Students must be fully admitted into the Graduate School in order to be considered for an assistantship. Assistantships include full tuition and a stipend, as well as a heath plan. Applicants for assistantships should be prepared to audition and interview with the music education faculty members.
